Inferring and Negotiating User Goals: Adaptive Dialogue Planning Using Abduction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents an approach to adaptive dialogue planning in the framework of an intelligent information retrieval system (MIRACLE), which provides semantic access to multimedia information via a WWW interface. The system uses abduction to infer users, interests and dialogue goals: ambiguous user queries are interpreted with respect to the semantic domain model and unexpected dialogue acts are interpreted in light of the actual dialogue history. On the basis of these interpretations the system initiates a clarification dialogue offering the user suitable follow-up moves for continuing the dialogue. Depending on the user,s choice, the system adapts its dialogue strategy/plan for the next steps.

Resource-Adaptive Action Planning in a Dialogue System for Repair Support
For reasonable application in critical domains dialogue systems not only have to pay attention to user knowledge and dialogue goals but they also have to adapt their dialogue behaviour to current limitations of the user's cognitive processing capabilities. In case of a help system the point of concern is on the one hand the aspect as to what kind of help is appropriate for the user (What to do?...
متن کاملMixed-Initiative Retrieval Dialogues Using Abductive Reasoning
Using intelligent dialogue components, we can relate the isolated functions of information retrieval systems to larger tasks and help the user satisfy her information needs. Such dialogue components monitor the interaction between user and system and suggest what the user should do on the basis of her goals and the dialogue history. However, for these components to have the necessary flexibilit...
متن کاملDialogue Strategies for Multimedia Retrieval: Intertwining Abductive Reasoning and Dialogue Planning
Multimedia information retrieval is an inherently interactive process. When the user enters a conceptual query, that is, a specification of some information need in terms of abstract concepts, there may be many alternative ways of interpreting the query. This, in turn, affects the determination of what items are relevant for retrieval. In the MIRACLE system, these problems are tackled by combin...
متن کاملUser Model Acquisition Heuristics Based on Dialogue Acts
A wide-spread technique for user model acquisition is the use of acquisition heuristics, which are normally employed for inferring assumptions about the user’s beliefs or goals from observed user actions. These beliefs or goals can often be characterized as presuppositions to communicative actions that the user performs. In the area of natural-language systems, presupposition analysis technique...
متن کاملConversational Interaction for Semantic Access to Multimedia Information
Effective interaction is essential for effective information retrieval. The entire process of retrieval interaction should be organized in a way that allows the user to concentrate on her primary goals, i.e., clarifying vague information needs, finding appropriate search strategies, and assessing the relevance of retrieved information. Accordingly, an intelligent retrieval system must be capabl...
